For many students, casual work provides much needed income without compromising their academic schedules. They can enjoy the flexibility of being able to pick up shifts between classes, work weekends when required, and tend to dive into full-time hours during uni holidays. But its actually more than that, our employees are being introduced to the world of work from the ground up…on the factory floor – which provides them with invaluable exposure to “real world” experiences. They learn to do some hard graft for the beer money but also pick up valuable work attributes such as time management, resilience and the value of a hard day’s work!
These students may be fresh to the workforce, but don’t underestimate the skills they bring, and the ones they’re rapidly developing on the job. At DDL, we are strict on punctuality, reliability and safety and its soon becomes second nature. They also very quickly become team players, particularly when working shoulder-to-shoulder inside a 40ft container on a hot summers day or by stepping in for their mates on a shift swap or a last-minute client request.
From manufacturing and logistics to food production, warehousing, supply chain, and distribution, our workers are getting a crash course in how real-world operations run. In manufacturing, they learn about efficiency, quality control, problem solving and the importance of timing. In logistics and distribution, it’s all about coordination, planning, tracking systems and the need for a safety-first mindset. Food production teaches them hygiene, speed, and consistency, and warehousing brings home the value of process, space, organisation and attention to detail.
On the flip side, our clients gain access to a pool of energetic and highly adaptable talent that bring with them a ‘fresh lens’ to how things could be done. At DDL, we understand what makes our workers tick and we offer the kinds of roles that fit their preferences and work styles. Essentially, we try to connect our students with like to offer them roles that make sense for them right now, while also setting them up for what’s next in life. Perhaps one of the most powerful things that casual work with DDL offers is a safe space to learn, improve and take accountability for outcomes.
So, while they might start out looking for flexible work to support their studies, we like to think that our workers are also quietly becoming well-rounded, work-ready professionals with a broad set of industry-specific capabilities. We believe it’s an investment that pays off, not just for them, but for the businesses lucky enough to have them represent them, even if it’s just in the short term.
At DDL, we are proud to offer a recruitment model that benefits all sides of the employment equation.
The future is bright.
